What I Wish Someone Told Me About Interning in a Boutique Digital Marketing Agency

Hello, I’m Musarrat, and over the past three months, I’ve had the unique opportunity to serve as
a digital and social media intern at Loki. Prior to this, my journey in the social media landscape
was as a solopreneur, catering mainly to small business owners. The prospect of working within
an agency always intrigued me, and finally stepping into the dynamic world of Loki has been
nothing short of a thrilling adventure.
In this relatively short span, I’ve gained insights and experiences that have broadened my
perspective on digital marketing. Join me as I reflect on my newfound knowledge and share five
crucial things that I wish I had known about agency life before embarking on this exciting
journey with Loki!

Even the Big Shots are Figuring Things Out

So, before joining Loki, I spent my time diving deep into the worlds of 1:1 clients, mainly small
business owners. We were all about getting to the core of what makes each brand tick, you
know?

It’s kind of amusing to see how hardworking these small business folks are when it comes to
content creation. They sometimes think the big shots out there have cracked the secret code to
social media glory.

But guess what? My Loki adventure showed me a whole new side of things. Those giant
multinational companies (MNCs)? Yeah, turns out they’re also in the middle of figuring things
out. The idea that the big brands have it all figured out is just a myth, my friend.
This whole content strategy thing is a constant learning ride for everyone. So, to all you interns
stepping into the agency world, don’t stress too much. There’s no one-size-fits-all rule. Every
brand dances to its own tune, and how their audience vibes with them is always changing.
Embrace the unknown – we’re all in this learning game together!

Getting the Hang of Switching Between Brands in an Agency

So, here’s another thing that took me by surprise in agency life: juggling different brands. It’s a
bit like spinning plates at a circus – only with brands instead.

Picture this: one moment you’re crafting content for a tech whiz, and the next, you’re diving into
the world of, let’s say, artisanal soap makers. It’s a rollercoaster of industries, my friend.
In the beginning, it’s like trying to ride a bike for the first time without the training wheels.
Overwhelming is an understatement. You become this content machine, pumping out materials
for all sorts of businesses in a single day when things kick into high gear.

But, and this is a big but, you get the hang of it. The first month is like stepping into a wild,
untamed jungle – you’re decoding each brand’s vibe, their language, their style, and how they
like things done. It’s like making a bunch of new friends, but for work!

So, if I could go back and tell my past self something, I’d say, “Hey, brace yourself for a wild ride
in the first month. It’s like learning to dance with a different partner for each song. But guess
what? Once you find your rhythm, it becomes this crazy, amazing dance party where you’re the
DJ, spinning tunes for every brand’s unique vibe.

Juggling Acts and Deadline Dances

Here’s another nugget of wisdom about agency life that I wish I knew before stepping into this
whirlwind: the epic skill of task prioritization. Imagine juggling, but instead of balls, they’re tasks,
and the circus music is the hum of approaching deadlines.
You see, in the agency world, deadlines don’t just knock on the door – they sometimes throw a
party, all back to back. It’s like navigating a deadline maze, and let me tell you, it can get a bit
confusing.

Learning to prioritize tasks is like becoming the captain of your own ship in a sea of
assignments.

You’re steering through the waves of deadlines, deciding which ones to tackle first
and which ones can wait a bit. It’s a dance, a balancing act, and yeah, sometimes it feels like
you’re putting out fires with a water gun.
But here’s the kicker – you get good at it. With each task, each looming deadline, you become
this prioritization wizard. It’s not just about meeting deadlines; it’s about doing it in style, with a
strategy that makes even the busiest days feel like a well-choreographed dance. So, to all you
future agency rockstars, buckle up for the deadline rollercoaster and get ready to add “master of
prioritization” to your growing list of skills!

You won’t have to do everything alone!

Usually as a solopreneur growing a small business, you have to design your client’s content,
edit their videos, get on a meeting with them, manage their social media, write their captions,
plan their content calendars and more.
But in an agency, there is a whole team and tasks are distributed accordingly. Say, you have

done the visual copies for a content, you can then pass it to the designer to work on the visual
copies. And you will always have a team member to bounce ideas off and they will always have
your back! I feel one thing working in Loki I felt was the positive warm vibes. I personally
enjoyed working with my team members and felt guided along the way.

Brewing transferable skills in the agency cauldron

One of the most invaluable aspects of my internship at Loki lies in the transferability of skills and
knowledge gained here to future endeavors. The insights gleaned from navigating diverse
brands, mastering task prioritization, and collaborating within a team setting have not only
broadened my perspective but also honed my ability to pay meticulous attention to detail.
As I embark on the next chapter of my career, whether it be continuing within the agency realm
or venturing into new territories, I carry with me a wealth of experiences and lessons learned at
Loki. These experiences have not only sharpened my eye for detail but have also equipped me
with the adaptability and resilience necessary to thrive in the ever-evolving landscape of digital
marketing.

So, to all aspiring marketers and industry enthusiasts, remember that the lessons learned today
guide us on a journey of self-discovery, where we find work that aligns with our most authentic
selves, a place where passion and purpose converge to propel us forward.
